| "At every crossing of the road that leads to the future, each progressive spirit is opposed by a thousand men (women) appointed to guard the past."- Morris Maeterlinck The definition of "doula" comes from the Greek word meaning a hand maiden/servant- a woman in service to women. How is a PowerBirth Genie different from a doula? The definition of "guide" means to escort, show the way, put on the right track, watch over, be by one's side, and look after. Technically speaking, the difference between a doula and a genie is that the doula is a servant to the mother during labor, whereas the genie assumes a more active role as a mentor (a wise and trusted teacher). There comes a point during almost every normal labor/birth when the mother's intellect is over-ridden by the primal force of her body's attempt to birth her unborn baby. This is when most women will give in to the nurse's suggestion of an epidural. This is when the PowerBirth Guide's knowledge can help put the mother back on the right track by helping her reconnect with her power, thus avoiding an epidural and ultimately a cesarean! A PowerBirth Genie takes the crossing of the road that leads to a certain future where women take back their power and ignore the ridiculous "Rule of Ten." This rule was implemented by men at a time when all women were unconscious during birth. It was a rule meant for men who could (and did) otherwise fatally injure a woman and her unborn during childbirth by his brute strength alone. However, although midwives today preach about the importance of trusting and honoring woman's body and instincts, many still fanatically adhere to this outdated rule, thereby completely contradicting what the woman's body is clearly demanding that she do to help birth her baby. This leads to abnormally long labors and unnatural stress to the unborn child. In the hospital, it leads to the epidemic of cesareans now being performed in the United States. Hypnotized birth, husband coached childbirth, and panting like a dog birth, are all great for the first stages of labor, but they often fail when a woman reaches the half way mark of dilation. It is then that women give up and take an epidural. And why do they give up? They fail because they were taught to ignore the very strong messages from their own bodies. They are taught this by most midwives, doulas, childbirth educators, nurses, and doctors! |
